Lamine Yamal, the promising talent from Barcelona's La Masia academy, has his sights set on following in the footsteps of his idol Lionel Messi by winning the prestigious Golden Boy award.
Having recently been recognized with 'The Youngest' honor in 2023 at the age of just 16, Yamal expressed his ambition to claim the ultimate Golden Boy trophy, an accolade reserved for the best player under the age of U21 in world football. He stated, “It's an important award. The first I've received on an international level. I'd like to win the real one, the absolute best. I know about it, I saw who won it, even Messi, and I would like to be on that roll of honour. Sooner or later I'll see you in Turin, I promise.”
Drawing inspiration from his idol Messi, whom he admires greatly, Yamal expressed his admiration, saying, “He is my idol. He always has been, he continues to be now that I play for Barcelona. He inspired me. I have never had another idol. I once took a photo with him. I was unknown. Maybe one day I will be like him.”
Amidst his aspirations, Yamal has already made significant strides at Barcelona and Spain, securing four senior caps and scoring two goals. Currently, he's dedicated to helping Barcelona defend their Liga title while also aiming for progress in the Champions League.
